Standardization_bodies

The standardization bodies in the table below are identified as the relevant ones to the CONVINcE project. In these forums and working groups, the project contributed on 6 different working groups with 38 technical contributions during the project. Some work still continues after the project on these standardization forums.

Name Overview relevance to CONVINcE
3GPP: 3rd generation partnership project The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) unites [Seven] telecommunications standard development organizations (ARIB, ATIS, CCSA, ETSI, TSDSI, TTA, TTC), known as “Organizational Partners” and provides their members with a stable environment to produce the Reports and Specifications that define 3GPP technologies.
The project covers cellular telecommunications network technologies, including radio access, the core transport network, and service capabilities – including work on codecs, security, quality of service – and thus provides complete system specifications. The specifications also provide hooks for non-radio access to the core network, and for interworking with Wi-Fi networks.
3GPP specifications and studies are contribution-driven, by member companies, in Working Groups and at the Technical Specification Group level.
CONVINcE project has studied the energy consumption in Cellular terminals and proposed enhancements to the existing cellular standards in order to reduce the power consumption in the terminal. CONVINcE project partners have bee driving Server and Network Assisted DASH for 3GPP Multimedia Services work in 3GPP SA4
IETF – Internet Engineering Task Force and IRTF – Internet Research Task Force The mission of the IETF is to make the Internet work better by producing high quality, relevant technical documents that influence the way people design, use, and manage the Internet. In the IETF CONVINcE project has focused on improving the management models needed for energy aware devices and for constrained deivces. Spcifically the project focused on a draft related to nework management and YANG Model of Battery MIB.
MPEG – Moving Picture Experts Group Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), a working group of ISO/IEC with the mission to develop standards for coded representation of digital audio and video and related data. Since 1988 when it has been established, the group has produced standards that help the industry offer end users an ever more enjoyable digital media experience.
In its 25 years of activity MPEG has developed an impressive portfolio of standards and technologies that have created an industry worth several hundreds billion USD.
In a world where information technology, consumer electronics, entertainment and telecommunication products and content variously converge by incorporating increasingly sophisticated technologies and the need for timely available standards is as strong as ever, MPEG provides a proven mechanism to bring research results into standards that promote industry innovation for the benefit of all.
A specific Adhoc group was created at MPEG meeting #114 in San Diego (February 2016) which oversees establishing requirements for Network-distributed video coding. Group focused its attention on Guided transcoding Use-cases and the goal is to show evidence of gains in terms of bandwidth or CPU usage which also means gain in power consumption and thus is relevant to CONVINcE activities. The work done is not only addressing Future Video Coding but also legacy codecs (AVC, HEVC).
W3C – World Wide Web Consortium The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international community where Member organizations, a full-time staff, and the public work together to develop Web standards. Led by Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee and CEO Jeffrey Jaffe, W3C’s mission is to lead the Web to its full potential. CONVINcE project has followed the W3C work and evolment of the new sematic models that are being discussed in the Web of Things group. The relation to CONVINcE is that we have identified that the project results are applicable also for the future semantic models being defined. In this forum the project has not had a direct contribution as the work in the forum started later than in the other forums.
